Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery involved the placement of small incisions of 0.5-1cm to introduce instruments and a camera and carry out the procedure with the abdomen inflated with gas to allow room to work. An extraction site is usually required to remove the diseased portion of bowel but this is far smaller than an open midline incision

Compared with open surgery, patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery experience less bleeding, less scarring, less pain and shorter recovery times.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic colorectal surgery has increased in popularity over the last 3-4 years. It allows for a stable platform from which to operate and allows enhanced vision with a 3D HD field of view. It also allows for far greater manoeuvrability if the wristed instruments. This is particularly of use operating in enclosed spaces such as the pelvis.

This shows many of the same improvements that laparoscopic surgery shows over open surgery as well as a lower likelihood of need to convert to open surgery.
